Q: When I fix the itunes registry error, my cd/dvd player stops functioning.

So, I repeatedly received the iTunes error: "The registry settings used by the ITUNES drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing."  I did numerous uninstall and reinstalls and eventually followed the steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3299  That solved the issue of the warning message appearing.  HOWEVER, it has completely disabled my cd/dvd drive.  I cannot use it for anything now.  I can revert the registry back, but I know the error will be back then.  So I was just wanting to see if there were any other suggestions.  Thanks so much.

A couple of things are springing to mind here, but it would be helpful to have a closer look at the situation first.

Could you post your diagnostics for us please?

In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:

    dvdcd diagnostics.png

    ... and click "Next".

When you get through to the final screen:

    diagnostics complete.png

... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here.

Drat, that's not as conclusive as I had hoped.

Could you put the GEARAspiWDM filter in and post back with a fresh set of diagnostics showing what's happening when the drive is invisible, please?

(I'm trying to determine if we're getting an AFS.SYS conflict here, or possibly one of the exotic "virtual drives" variations on this business. Usually the AFS.SYS issue gets mentioned in diagnostics showing the error -43, but it might be hiding from us for one reason or another.)

Thanks for your help.  Alright, so I ran the diagnostics, but it prompted me to designate which drive and, of course, no drive could be found.

    Hmmmm. It's being cryptic.

We'd better try Solution 2 from the following document just in case:

iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install

The worry here is that normally with an AFS.sys issue, there's a note in the Diagnostics saying the driver is installed, as per, for example, the following post:

Re: CD registary error shows up on start up, can't burn a cd.

... on the other hand, the drives disappearing when the device filter goes in is a classic AFS.sys syndrome. (When the drives are missing from Computer, there's usually a Code 10 warning showing next to them in Device Manager too.)

No afs.sys or afs2k.sys driver to be found.  I checeked the drive in the device manager and under properties is: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

So, I have no idea about registry issues, but would putting in an upperfilters AND lowerfilters edit do anything?  Because I have only been putting in the upperfilters edit whenever I try the fix listed in support, because it says nothing about "lowerfilters."
