my ipod is a third g touch but it says that 4.2.1 is the current update. how do i get it to update?

I would really like to find a way to fix my ipod. i had to get my previous one replaced by Apple but it still wont update

That error message generally indicates you have a 2nd generation unit, and can not be upgraded beyond 4.2.1. Please check the model number on the back, A1288 is 2nd gen, A1318 is 3rd gen.

No you didn't. You sent them a 2G iPod. Was it 8GB or 16GB? In that case it was definitely a 2G iPod as Apple never made an 8GB or 16GB iPod Touches, only 32 and 64GB.
