Q: Old sim card?

I have recently been given an iphone 3gs from my brother. When trying to register on itunes, I get a message about not being able to recognise my sim card, and that I should replace it. My brother and I both use the same carrier, Telstra, however my simcard is about 14 years old. Would a new replacement sim card fix my problem?
