password issue with @me.com account

I cannot get my @me.com account on line on my Mac because it does not accept my valid password. Why is this happening now? I can access iCloud on the web to get my mail with the same password but not on the Mac.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I think they're slowing nudging people to the fact that MobilMe & .mac is going away shortly in favor of iCloudinees! 😟

Get an iCloud account first.

MobileMe & dot Mac will still work last I heard.

iCloud Mail setup, even in 10.4/10.5…

Don't delete your old account yet. Just setup a new one in Mail>Preferences>Accounts, little plus icon. Choose IMAP as account type, not ,mac or MobileMe.

IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:

  • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
  • SSL Required: Yes
  • Port: 993
  • Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
  • Password: Your iCloud password

SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:

  • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
  • SSL Required: Yes
  • Port: 587
  • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
  • Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
  • Password: Your iCloud password

thank you - your suggestions look as if they would work. However, I do have an 'active' account that I would like to keep rather than creating a new one. The account/password works on the ICloud web site and on iTunes but has stopped working on my Mac. It suddenly went 'offline' and will not accept my valid password so I can't make any changes or get it online. Is there any other way to resolve this?

Sorry - must be dense.....how can I create a 'new' account on the Mac that is not a new account? Don't I need to create a new valid email address to create a new account? And, if I did that how could it be the same email account as my current one?

Just to reiterate: I have an active iCloud account that I can access on the web with no problem. Up until about a week ago it was active on my Mac and that is were I was reading all my emails and it was listed as an active account under "all mailboxes". Suddenly it is no longer active and it will not accept my password so that I can make changes/corrections to the account etc.

Is this an issue related to the last migration steps to iCloud? I made my switch from the mobile me account to iCloud late in February.

You can use the same old eMail address, only the description needs to be different, this will be a duplicate account except that it's like somebody has moved & you are readdressing the envelope.

We're only leaving the old account for safety, once we see the new one works we can disable or remove the old account if the new one shows all the correct eMails.

I could not create the new account using the old email address. I did try to set up an IMAP but only got the message described earlier.

I have not yet tried to create a complete new email account as I really do not want another Apple ID. I just want to keep the current one. As mentioned earlier, it looks as if I need to upgrade my system to meet the requirements for ICloud.

I can access my @me account through my iPod because it is running the newest ios5 system. It is just frustrating to have to go to the web site or switch to the iPod for the @me.com email instead of getting all my emails at one source - my inbox on the Mac.

thanks for all your suggestions etc.

Whew, just triedit on 10.6.5, it sure throws a bit of a roadblock or 3 to us, but...

If you cannot edit the servers to the new iCloud ones, then...

Quit Mail, in Finder goto...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/IMAP-YourMailName@imap.mail.me.com

Right click or control+click, choose duplicate, once done, start Mail, goto Mail Preferences>Accounts, highlight the old MobileMe accounts, click the little minus icon below, then setup a bew IMAP account.

If worried about losing anything...

On Mail...

First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.

Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail

Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads

(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)

Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Make a copy of this file also.
