Error 54: Connection reset by peer

Getting 'error 54: Connection reset by peer' when trying to send email. Seems to receive ok though. Other threads I've searched for go back 2009 and suggest upgrading sytem to 10.6.1, but this is 2012 and I'm on 10.6.8! Tried my ISP provider and they were next to useless.
