Kernal panics

Keep getting kernal panics. Shutdowns. After trying to upgrade to snow leopard. Same thing happened a few years ago. Just gave up trying to amek it work. Disk utility runs clean, then it says use start up from disk for errors. Wont let dvd be used as start up from the snow leopar if snow leopard drive starts at all.

funny, killed something on my leopard drive, so booted into a backup, since CS6 is snow leopard only for macs, i thought i'd give it another shot. sure enough same problems with the kernal crashes.

funny that it is only a problem with snow leopard. tried several drives, but they all crash. i had snow leopard working for long enough to install lion onto one drive, and then into mountain lion for another drive, and both work fine, but the lack of arrows and other OS inforced changes make them not usable for me.

put SL onto a clean hard drive, waited, and it crashed with no programs. tried a clean install and migration, crashed. tried safe boot mode and restart, crash. tried deleting cache, crash. and of course, the obvious reset PRam, onyx, utilities, ect. there is no one circumstance which can cause the crash, whether anything is running or lots of things running, it will still crash. more often, when more are running, it will crash sooner.

I asked my old IT guy to make sure the ram was supported by snow leopard. it is quality RAM at 32 GB, purchased after the first onset of crashes, so that would mean the factory RAM would've crashed as well, i think, was over three years ago now.

may just have to go back to the leopard OS drive and install cs6 on a windows partition. but if i'm going to payout that much for adobe windows, then after twenty something years of being apple only, may have to just go to the darkside for my next computer.

I've researched this much, but have found no solution.

Thanks for taking a look at it.

didn't take long. ran all last night in safe mode, i didn't get a kernal panic, but system also got unresponsive.

If no KPs in safe mode, then most likely one of these is causing the KPs when switching back to normal mode. You'll need to disable or delete them, reinstall one at a time, until you find the culprit:

Since you have so many, it will be very time consuming to uninstall then reinstall entire programs. Instead, you can try disabling the individual culprit kexts.

Note: disabling a kext this way may not always work as it may refuse to cooperate, but this is usually effective. The worst that will happen is you'll get a message saying it won't work.

You can temporarily uninstall any .kext, which may be causing the problem, by doing the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste

sudo kextunload

Important, leave a space after kextunload

Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.

This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/

Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.

This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.

Other than that, have a look at this article, already linked above by Baltwo, on resolving kernel panics. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

parallels = culprit.

That is possible, but it is also possible for any one of your other system modifications to conflict with the ones installed by Parallels.

Audio drivers such as Soundflower appear often, and you have another one that appears to be a system audio modification with which I am not familiar (VaraAudio).

The probability of a conflict increases with the number of system modifications, so do not be too quick to implicate one as the sole case of your kernel panics.

Dec 4, 2012 9:04 AM in response to John Galt

I would agree with that. came to the conclusion that it was parallels after i tried an upgrade on my old macbook. parallels seemed to be the only comparitive connection once older things like hp, little snitch, spirit, virtualbox, ect. were removed or not installed, it got kernal panics of the same variety. once that computer upped into lion seemed to work ok. It is terrible to try to use a small screen computer without scrollbars and arrows, so am getting rid of that computer. I think i'm ok with sticking with 10.5 on the macpro. adobe supports all sorts of virtual windows operating systems, so won't be missing out on anything.
