MobileMe and iCloud... No syncing mail?! What is the alternative?

Have I been living under a rock? How can MobileMe end and be replaced with a product, iCloud, that doesn't provide one of the main features - ie. syncing mail, preferences, etc. Surely, there must be a reasonable alternative... Any suggestons? Am I missing something?

iCloud, MobileMe

IMAP doesn't sync your mail rules and account information between Macs.

Add me to the list dreading MobileMe shutting down and being forced to switch to iCloud which lacks all but a couple of features of MobileMe.

Going to be a whole lot of very upset Mac users in a few months.

No, but iCloud can do that part, at least it does for me. And, it is completely seamless if you use MobileMe for your mail, i.e., you have a me.com or mac.com email address.

You aren't forced to switch to iCloud. You can use any third-party service that provides the services you prefer to have. Actually iCloud only lacks a couple of things provided by Mobile Me, mainly iDisk and file backups.

Perhaps you need to explore what iCloud actually does instead of making a predetermination that it's not any good.

But feel free to complain about it, but please don't do that on the forums.

Really, not being forced. So I can just keep on using MobileMe... not, it's being turned off in two months.

As far as using third party services. Tell me about these third party services that will provide keychain syncing, mail rules syncing and mail signature syncing between all of my Macs.

And what exactly will be the purpose of that on an IMAP account. So long as you have the rules on one of your devices any changes those rules make to your mail account will be applied across all devices. I think you're just looking for things to complain about without thinking them through.

Yes that's correct, try reading what I have written, what is the purpose of syncing mail rules when you have an IMAP account.

I have some mail with certain addresses or content, that the spam filter doesn't catch, being marked as read and sent to the trash.

I have mail from sponsors going straight into a sponsor folder. Same for mail from Meetup.com and a buch of other places too.

Other rules change the color of certain messages as they come in.

The list goes on and is uodated and changed often.

I have eight mail accounts and probably around 30 mail rules at anytime.

Same issue with mail signatures not syncing under iCloud.

Then there is the 1000 or so items in my keychain that will stop syncing with iCloud.

Well, how about the little fact that if your mail rules are only set up on one machine and not synched to the others, they won't be applied when Mail is not up and running on that one machine?

Say, you set up your mail rules on your desktop at home, then go on a trip with your MacBook and the power goes out at home? Or you simply turn the home machine off when you're gone to save energy? Are you supposed to live without mail rules until you get back home?

I didn't ask you about signatures or keychain.s I asked you what possible reason there would be to sync rules with an IMAP account. I can think of plenty of reasons that I certainly wouldn't want rules to sync, because it will cause problems. I can think of no reason that anybody would want to sync rules with an IMAP accounts.

I own multiple Macs. Why do you find it so hard to understand that I need my mail rules to stay in sync between machines?

And rules and signatures sync together under MobileMe so you can't talk about syncing rules without also talking about syncing signatures.

And it doesn't do much good that IMAP keeps your mailboxes in sync if you don't know your ID and Password for them so one also needs their keychains to also sync.

Not to mention what happens when you are on the road and you need to modify your rules and now the other machine has an outdated set of rules?
