A missing trash icon may happen for several reasons; either you Aperture library has a problem, your preferences file is corrupted, or the System trash has a problem, to name a few.

Is your Aperture version really Aperture 2? Then start with the Trouble Shooting basics as described here:

Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2945

but if you are on Aperture 3, here:

Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805

Before you do any of the options above, quit Aperture and make sure you have a backup of your Aperture Library.

Aperture 2:

  • I'd start with a consistency check on the library, and if this check shows problems, rebuilding the library.
  • If this should not solve the problem, remove the Aperture preferences as described in Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics

Aperture 3:

  • Begin with repairimg the permissions, and if that does not help, with repairing the database.
  • If you still have a problem remove the Aperture Preferences file.

Post back, if there still is a problem
