Why is my superdrive slow

I have a brand new 21.5" iMac. I am installing LOGIC and it seems like the superdrive is EXTREMELY slow. DISC 1 of Logic took so long I left it and went to bed. I am on Audio disk 3 now. This is taking FAR too long. I have installed Logic before and have a 2006 iMac that Logic was on. It never took this long.

Any clues? Or do I have a bum drive?

Here's an older discussion thread discussing something very similar. One poster reports that he resolved the issue by making disk images of the DVD's (presumably using the Disk Utility application). You might consider giving that method a try if your getting estimated install times of 296 hours.
