Q: screen keeps shutting off

When I put my macbook pro to sleep, by shutting the screen, then open it up, the screen is bright for a few seconds then it all goes black. I then have to open the screen numerous times to keep the lights on, or else I have to quickly shut down the computer all the way and restart in order ot keep the screen lights on. Any idea why?

No idea as you did not mention which model Macbook Pro you have or os.

Does this article apply to your model? MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues . The affected computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008.

...is it connected to an external display? i've heard of similiar issues revolving around second displays when it's connected...

...but it could be as simple as a settings issue...

My mbp is a fairly new, bought it last year, 2.2 Ghz i7, with Mac OS X 10.7.3. It is not connected to an external display. Any ideas on problems? If it is a setting issue, what are some of the settings I should explore?

...i was going to say try going into your system preferences hardware>energy saver> and restore defaults...

but I'm now curious if it's an internal wiring issue?
