Problem with hard drive in Mac

Hello Apple Communities.

I have recently checked out my System Imformation, went to look at the space I have left on my hard disk.

I was suprised. I never put this much in my hard drive, but suddenly it said that I only had about 63 GB left!

It was full of backups, and I never had a backup in my drive, exepct Time Machine, of course.

Any reasons why this problem is being caused?

Time Machine has the habit of taking snapshots of the drive every so often, which accounts for the great deal of room taken. And it keeps those snapshots around until the room is needed, at which time it purges the oldest ones and reclaims the space.

Hence, the display is misleading and a misservice to untrained users, an issue discussed on other forum threads ad nauseam. Hopefully corrected in the forthcoming cat this summer.
