Q: can finder show .nrw files from nikon

I have been waiting long for Apple to add the function to see raw-files from Nikon P7000 in Finder. The files are called .NRW (not the usual .NEF). Is there any way to see the files as thumbnails in Finder?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I downloaded the 2 NRW photos from your dropbox.

Then in Finder I put a few NEF photos next to the NRW photos:

Finder Icon view: the NRW did not have the icon preview in Finder, the NEF did.

    Finder List view: the same

Filnder Column view: the NRW clicked: preview!!

Finder Cover Flow view: the NRW did not have the icon preview in Finder, the NEF did.

    MBP 10.7.3.

So if there in the same folder you don't see the icon for the NRW? What if you put the nrw files in a folder of their own?

    Thank you for trying!

The info shows the same on my computer as on yours.

I noticed one strange thing when I was logged in as an other user. I searched the harddrive for files named .NRW and finder showed the thumbnail for the first 250 or so pictures taken with the Coolpix P7000 but after that it stopped. ( the pictures in the dropbox are numbers 1184 and 1185 as you can see on the filenames ). And the pictures just before and after are taken at the same time and at the same subject so there is no different setup in the camera or anything like that.

When logged in with my usual account the first 250 is not shown as thumbnails.

    I tried this:

I selected the generic icon of the image file

In the menu, I selected "Open with"

My computer was set to open with: Capture NX 2.app (default)

I changed the default to: Preview.app

The generic icon instantly changed to a thumbnail of the image.

Then I changed "Open with" back to my original default and so far it seems to be working.

I did this both with my own generic icons, and with the generic icon I downloaded from Fredsson's DropBox.

I just did this a few minutes ago, so I can't vouch for how long this fix will last. Maybe the problem lies not with Apple but with Nikon. I have recently updated Nikon Capture NX 2, Nikon Transfer, and View NX2. I had had the problem with photofiles downloaded from a newly purchased Nikon P7100.

I have tried that too. I have View NX2 as the default program to open the picture. I have tried to change to Lightroom, Photoshop, Pixelmator and others. The only difference is when I choose Preview, then the icon change from a blank paper to a paper with the text RAW and a small picture of two photos and a loupe. That’s the only time there is a difference.

Alas, I took 5 more photos on my Nikon P7100 and downloaded the files. This time, thumbnails of the image displayed on 3 files but as generic icons on two. I repeated the process, selecting the Finder as the application for  Nikon Transfer to open the files. This time, all photofiles displayed as generic icons.

"Get Info" on the generic icons correctly identifies the model of the camera, f-number, exposure time, focal length, and within "Get Info" Preview creates a thumbnail of the file

Sorry to have raised false hopes for a solution.

Today (4 days later), the generic icons suddenly became thumbnails of the images, for no apparent reason. This delayed display of NRW thumbnails on a Mac was noted in the last entry of another discussion of this problem:

Now, a few hours after my last post, my NRW thumbnails reverted back to generic icons. In the interim, I updated system OS 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 and rebooted.
