iphone 4 home button not working

For the second time in a month, the home button on my iPhone 4 stopped working. First, it stopped intermittently, then it stops entirely. Last time, I powered my phone off and it was fine - until today. I'm syncing now so I don't lose any data, but this time, I think I am going to reset it in iTunes to see if that helps.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I got my phone in February of 2011 so it isn't covered by AppleCare, but apparently the hardware is covered under a thing I did at Verizon. Should I just get a fresh phone, even if it is another 4 and not a 4S?

Thanks for these ideas. The problem turned out to be oils from my finger accumulating on the contacts of the button over time. I went to the Apple Store and a Genius used a alcohol wipe to clean the button. I had to do this myself a few weeks later but used 91% isopropyl alcohol and a QTip instead. I did this late at night so the alcohol evaporated by the next morning. Don't use alcohol wipes with other chemicals and use at least 80% alcohol.

As a temporary solution you can do the following, which the Genius also showed me.

1. Restart your phone by powering down

2. Restart then go to Settings...General

3. Go to Accessibility...AssistiveTouch

4. Turn AssistiveTouch on

A new icon will now float above all apps you run. This is a software Home button and it can be moved around the screen. When your Home button starts to act up, turn this one on until you can clean the real one.

Okay, Don't panic.

I faced the same problem, that my iphone's home button wasn't working. Like most of the people those who all have faced or are facing this problem.

* No Jailbreak app required.

* I tried resetting

* I tried pushing the charging socket to make the home button work.

Cause : This might have happened coz you'd have installed some app, which wasn't properly installed.

What I did was, I entered the " DFU Mode "

How to do that ?

1. Power off your device & keep your phone connected via usb cable to the computer.

2. press the power button [ the top right button which we use to lock the fone ] for 10seconds

3.now keeping the power button pressed, press "home button" along with it. And both the buttons pressed for some 10seconds.

4. Release the power button, keep home button pressed for some 10seconds. And you'll get itunes opened up..

[ If the steps which I've typed below ain't clear to you, check google for " How to enter DFU mode "

it'll remove the application which wasn't letting your home button work properly.

This worked for me,

Hi,

Just wanted to update on my findings with having the same issue. I ended up purchasing a new button off of Ebay for $5. When I took the phone apart there was no dust, its a 4 not a 4s and i carry it in my pocket, so I do not belive that dust was the issue,

However if you look at the way the ribbon cable is designed and sits in the phone, it is flexed causing extra tension to be put on the cable and my cable actually appeared to be cracked. I have had the new button in for over a week not and have not had the issue return at all.

I belive this, that the ribbon cable was cracked causing a poor connection sometimes working and sometimes not, which leads me to belive that all of the ways to re-align the button just put the right type of pressure on the ribbon for a temporary "good" connection only to become faulty again.

I wish I would have taken pictures but this is just my observation and opinion. Anyway the new button works like a charm!

Good Luck!

It is most likely not the hardware. Mines does the same thing. When i plug it to the cord, it works. I read up on a thread dating back last year and I guess the issue is still not fixed.

I called into Apple a couple of times already wiping my phone a couple of times already, syncing, starting fresh.... it comes back randomly. This started happening to me ever since i upgraded to version 5.0.
