iphone 4 home button not working

For the second time in a month, the home button on my iPhone 4 stopped working. First, it stopped intermittently, then it stops entirely. Last time, I powered my phone off and it was fine - until today. I'm syncing now so I don't lose any data, but this time, I think I am going to reset it in iTunes to see if that helps.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I got my phone in February of 2011 so it isn't covered by AppleCare, but apparently the hardware is covered under a thing I did at Verizon. Should I just get a fresh phone, even if it is another 4 and not a 4S?

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device. Have you gone through ALL of these troubleshooting steps?

If you have gone through ALL the troubleshooting steps and you're still having problems, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation

It is most likely not the hardware. Mines does the same thing. When i plug it to the cord, it works. I read up on a thread dating back last year and I guess the issue is still not fixed.

I called into Apple a couple of times already wiping my phone a couple of times already, syncing, starting fresh.... it comes back randomly. This started happening to me ever since i upgraded to version 5.0.

Hey, My home button would not work either and noticed it would work on and off sometimes. Finally I realized that it would work on and off after I plugged it in to charge.

So I figured out how to make it work without any reset. It is VERY simple:

1. Plug in you phone with the provided charging connector. (doesn’t matter if it is plugged in to a power source, the connector is going to be used simply as a tool)

2. Use slight force to push the connector a little deeper into the phone. The point is to slightly shift the hardware under the home button.

3. Keep pushing the connector into the phone and or wiggling it until the home button works again. Then carefully and slowly unplug your phone.

I realized that the home button must shift out of position for some reason. By using the connector, you can push the hardware back into place. That is prop why resynching helps. Thats because you have to plug in the phone causing the hardware to shift. I’m no engineer, but it makes sense to me, most importantly, it works!

Good Luck

Thanks for these ideas. The problem turned out to be oils from my finger accumulating on the contacts of the button over time. I went to the Apple Store and a Genius used a alcohol wipe to clean the button. I had to do this myself a few weeks later but used 91% isopropyl alcohol and a QTip instead. I did this late at night so the alcohol evaporated by the next morning. Don't use alcohol wipes with other chemicals and use at least 80% alcohol.

As a temporary solution you can do the following, which the Genius also showed me.

1. Restart your phone by powering down

2. Restart then go to Settings...General

3. Go to Accessibility...AssistiveTouch

4. Turn AssistiveTouch on

A new icon will now float above all apps you run. This is a software Home button and it can be moved around the screen. When your Home button starts to act up, turn this one on until you can clean the real one.

The solution I posted is obviosly not a permanent fix. It just makes your phone work properly. The reality is that the hardware is still faulty. However this does work very well so that you do not have to shell out a bunch of your hard earned cash on such a simple solution. It becomes a pain however just be mindful not to shift the hardware every time you charge your phone. Every so often I forget and cause my hardware to shift. Its an easy solution though. Im glad I could help out.
