I was told that a mac book pro running lion would sync with an exchange server like my iphone does. Well they don't at least not in any useful way. None of the genius', geeks or whatever the microsoft people call themselves could make it happen for more than a minute or two (although the guy from microsoft/india wanted $269.00 to talk to me about the issue. I spent thousands of dollars in products, downloads, server upgrades, fixes, patches, pastes, proxy settings, protocol adjustments and man hours to try to make it happen but it never has. All anyone could ever get was the spinning wheel of death. Macs are great for pictures, videos, games and music but essentially useless for any meaningful commercial applications.

Suggestion: Reconfigure the way a Mac is supposed to sync with an exchange server in the same manner that an iphone or ipad will, they work. The mac does not. Until then the Mac is a great toy but that's about it.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3), involves boot camp and windows.

Thank you for your suggestion. To answer your question, it is a little of both rant and question. The Mac support people have been very nice and given us lots of information about how to sync with the server but none of them (save except one who did some kind of patch which did stay long) have ever been able to do it. They suggested I call Microsoft and gave me a number that answered in ( I am not kidding - India). That guy said before we can speak he needed $269.00. That really ticked me off since I have spent at least (and again I am not kidding a hundred grand on microsoft mail and data servers with multiple redundant backups). I have several exchange servers that run 40 computers in two cities and two guys that keep them up to date and running. They are pretty savvy computer guys but they know nothing about MACs althought they have talked to the Mac "genius".

At this moment I can recieve email thru the exchange server, the Mac shows its connected to the exchange server but I cannot send or reply to an email, and the incoming and outgoing server is the same freaking server! My simple iphone syncs seeemlessly with my servers, email, calendars and contacts. It makes no sense. Any suggestions? Also I live 150 miles from the nearest apple store and the geeks and best buy don't have a clue what they are doing.

Sorry but no, they won't. The AppleCare terms of service set the limit at 50 miles from an authorized onsite service provider, so only if JH happens to live within that distance from such a provider would s/he be able to get on-site service. And they will not provide on-site service for an issue with configuration of Mail; on-site service is only for warranty-covered hardware issues.

iPhones connect to Exhange servers via ActiveSync, whereas Mac OS X Mail (as does Entourage EWS and Outlook 2011) connect via Exchange Web Services (I've read it's due to rather licensing issues for ActiveSync that prevents Apple from using it on OS X as well, but that's unconfirmed). So what works with one has little bearing on what works or doesn't work on the other.

Anyway, we'll see if we can come up with any ideas. Let's start with basics: what version of Exchange is running on the server and what version of Mac OS X is your MacBook running? And does this problem happen when you're connected directly to the company network, or only when you're connecting via another provider?

exchange server 2007 version 3 rollup 3?? I think that is the terminology that they use. Anyway it is the latest greatest upgraded just for this task. I understand and "rollup 4 came out in the last few days? the Mac is running 10.7.3 which had to be loaded twice. It did not take completely the first time and had lots of problems so Apple told me to re download and install which I did. It happens whether I connect directly thru the company network thru wi-fi or ethernet or from home using ATT U-verse.

Thanks for the additional information.

Rollup 4 came out in August of 2007. So if your company is indeed still on Rollup 3, they're very far behind. Mac OS X Mail requires Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 Update Rollup 4 or later, so confirm with your IT folks that this they're not still on an older version. If they are, that could be a factor.

If they confirm that they are indeed on a more recent update, the Exchange server's SSL port setting may be different that what Mail defaulted to. Check with your IT folks to confirm the correct SSL port settings, then change to the appropriate port number in Mail accounts preferences if necessary.

thank you for that. I checked with the IT guy and we are running 2007 Version 3 rollup 3. Apparently version 3 rollup 4 just came out. Anyway we are much later than what is stated to be required. That said they are going to check the port settings. They "thought" they were the same but they are going to check to be sure. Since there are two guys one may have made a settings change without telling the other. We will see. Thanks again.

Am having similar difficulties with a MacBook Air. 10.7.3 connecting to late vers of Exchange 2007 (not sure of particulars). When moving between networks, initial connection to server takes from 5 to 30 minutes before incoming/outgoing mail moves. Tons of activity shows up but no new mail moves. Is this a symptom of yours too jheymann? I have many folders and sub folders that see some movement of email over the course of a day but not constant movement. Thanks for the thread.

My mail, contacts and calendars have no problems whatsoever synchronizing to our Exchange server, nor do the two dozen or so other 10.6 and 10.7 systems also here at my company, so it's not a blanket problem that affects all Mac installations, anyway. I still suspect a setup problem with your Exchange server, though without any way to look at all the settings I can't say with any certainty. Perhaps the technician at the Apple Store can help you sort things out.

I would presume so, but not being an expert in Exchange server setups I can't tell you specifically where to look. My limited experience with Exchange leads me to believe that the settings are scattered around and not in one neat, obvious place. If you're asking if I can give you information from our Exchange setup, sorry but no, I can't, since I'm not one of the Exhange server admins here.

Regards.
