Trying to connect: Macbook Pro (Lion) to Sony Bravia TV!

I am trying to connect my Macbook Pro to a Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI, but are unable to get one to recognize the other. I am not sure what the problem is.

I have the following set up:

- Macbook 13" Early 2011 (2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 10.7.3)

- Dynex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter

- Sony Bravia KDL40SL150

- Normal HDMI cable (which works fine cause I use it for my PS3)

The Sony tv does not seem to recognise the Mac is connected (and/or vise versa). The screen is just normal, as if there is no input. Yes, I have tried all 4 of the HDMI inputs on it, Yes, I have set the tv input setting to match the corresponding input jack. HDMI does work on the tv though, as I have a PS3 connected via HDMI and that works fine.

The Mac Display preference pane does not detect the tv/monitor when I click 'detect display'. I can 'mirror' the displays because the tv doesn't even show up for me to mirror anything. I have tried various solutions others have mentioned for similar problems I found in these forms, such as turning the tv off then on, rebooting the Macbook before connecting, etc. and every other combination.

Has anyone with a very similar configuration managed to get this to work? Please note, I am well aware that many many people use HDTV's as a external monitor, but this is a Sony Bravia, not a LG, or Samsung, or anything else. Also, it is a Macbook, not a Powerbook or anything else.

OR should I try the VGA route. Buy a Mini Displayport to female VGA adaptor, then a male/male VGA cable and plug into the Sony tv? If I do this, will the screen be good quality though...? Cause I want to try and get the BEST quality I can so any information is great!

Any tips or success stories would be appreciated.

Thanks

Same problem here. Late 2011 MBP, year old Bravia.

When I connect the two with a mini displayport>HDMI cable the Sony shows no signal, the Display Preferences on the MBP doesn't change to show all the options it should after a successful handshake between the two.

Just read all the way therough a similar thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2180106?start=0&tstart=0 with almost 450K views and 551 replies to no avail.

I gave up on the HDMI connection and ordered a mini display>VGA adapter VGA cable with an attached audio cable from Monoprice.com. It should arrive tomorrow, I'll update you later.

After hours on the other thread I found this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2180106?start=0&tstart=0

That your Sony works with your PS3 over HDMI seems to point to the guts of the MBP being the problem. Hopefully addressable in firmware.

Problem solved, for me at least.

As an interem step to using the kludgy VGA and separate audio setup I picked up an mini display to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable.

Everything works fine now. Full monitoring on the 46" Bravia, all the new options show in Preferences>Display.

The adapter must have some passive/component/s in it that allow the Bravia and MBP make the handshake and talk to each other. Make sure you change the sound output in the Sound system preference.

The connector I used was:
