In the Terminal enter

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

Then relaunch the Finder. {Apple Manu -> Force Quit -> Finder}

.DS_Store is a file which is in every folder of your hard drive (the desktop is a folder in your account). It keeps track of things like window size and position.

Since it starts with a period, you aren't supposed to be able to see it. If you delete it, the system will immediately create another one.

Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. Enter the the next two lines one at a time, pressing Enter after each one. You can also copy/paste them from here into Terminal.

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

killall Finder
