Cant login to YouTube on AppleTV

Cant login to YouTube on AppleTV

I have had a new AppleTV for a week. All setup and working but it wont login to Youtube.

I have a fully functioning Youtube (gmail) account that logs in perfectly on a PC.

Following other posts I have setup the Google 'one time app' authentication for the AppleTV and used those credentials.

I know Appletv used those credentials - and I got them correct - because Google shows the one time password as having being accessed at that time and AppleTV doesnt complain about bad credentials (which it does if you make a typo).

The message I get is:

This account cannot be used with Apple TV. Try using a different account.

what on earth is going on? I am in Australia - but that shouldnt make any difference as my PC (with an Australian IP and account) allows me to login to YouTube, watch, see rent movies etc. So it cant be a Youtube restriction.

It must be some sort of AppleTV bug or stuff up?

I've seen similar issues/posts but no definitive fix. This is very furstrating to have paid a hundred bucks for something where a key advertised fuction doesnt work.

had that problem with the youtube login I got with my gmail so I created a new youtube login at youtube and that worked ok

Hmm - wish that fixed it. But it didnt

Just went to www.youtube.com and selected new account.

Filled in the details and got a brand new account.

It gives me an account in the format username@gmail.com - dont seem to be able to get anything else?

is it possible to get an account that doesnt end in gmail.com on Youtube now they are owned by Google?

Anyway end new username and credentials and get same message:

this account cannot be used for Apple tv.

really frustrating. found other posts on this topic that are over 3 years old - thats at least two version of apple tv hw ago.....surerly the same bug hasnt been there that long?

mate - I'm in Oz too.

do you think its another one of those 'undocumented festures' (aka Bug) we get by not living in the US?

cant be due to youtube content licensing - as I can buy/rent the youtube movies through my pc in (in Oz) - works fine and all legit.

But it wouldnt surprise me if its some apple stuff up where the appletv thingy cant work out the login unless you're in the USA.

Anyone in Oz got this to work yet?

Ok I just got it working. If you go onto the YouTube website, log in, then I clicked onto my channel. It asked if I wanted to start my own channel, which I did. Now I can log in on all my Apple devices.

Hope that helps It sure sorted me out.

Worked for me too. Thanks for the tip

combination of 'one time app' password plus creating a channel and now it will login (using the one time password).

Seems to work - well at least it shows me youtube favorutes etc.

doesnt seem to let me get to the youtube movie library to rent movies though?

I thought that would be an alternative/addition to the itune movies already on appletv....but apparently not.

anyone else got youtube movie rentals in appletv? If so, how.

None of the above worked for me, and I have had a user name for years. My regular google password did not work either. Suddenly my new phone wasn't working either. When I went to sign into google today, it asked me to set up a sub password for gadgets that don't work off of a browser. So I did that. I went back to my phone, and this password worked. So I went to the apple tv, and tried the password with my user name...and it did not work. So I tried it with my gmail sign in address...and it worked! I have an older Apple TV.

I already have a channel created on YouTube that ive had for ages, but have only just bought Apple TV. I cant login with my Google login or my original YouTube Login, or with 2 step verification activated. Its an Apple TV 3, does anyone else have any suggestions please?

I have an Apple TV 3 and through my google/youtube account have created many subscriptions on YouTube. UNtil recently everything worked fine on the Apple TV, i.e.. I was logged in with my gmail account on Youtube. Now I keep getting the "Cannot login, wrong ID/Password. Everyting works fine on my PC and other devices. So has Apple pulled the possibility to login to Youtube via the old Apple Youtube App (by the way I have the same problem on my 1st gen Ipad.

I have to say that i got the same problem: i try to log in youtube but the message is always "wrong id or password". I think it's dued to the new security features of google-gmail-youtube, i mean the one for tou have to type a code you get via sms when you try to access from a new computer or whatever... I am looking on Google if i can de-activate this security service.

Ok: i loggged in.

Finally i resumed the page to generate passwords for applications and generate one, then i logged in typing that on my apple tv and finally got in.

In the generating page it's said that this kind of password has to be typed once and that it will not be showed again...

Well, let's hope so.

Hi thanks for your help. I actually tried that way of doing it myself, and i dont know if i got something wrong, but it still didnt work for me! Anyway, i realised that you can play youtube videos from your phone onto your tv just through airplay, which suits me just fine, so i decided to forget about the YouTube on the Apple TV and just use my phone.
