Q: What is the difference between a UK laptop and a US laptop?

If you take it with you from here to there, will have to be very convincing that it is for your personal use and will be bringing it back when returning, else Her Majesty will slap you with an unfunny import tariff.
Warranty on portable gear is worldwide.
Sit down and study the specs on every one of the options available and match against what you will need for your studies. Once you pick the base model in the Apple Store, note that there are quite a few customizable items. RAM and hard disk drive options are outrageously expensive and are best upgraded by yourself.

I seem to have mixed up the spelling checker with VoiceOver and the oh-so-british "she-dzul" pronounciation instead of the pedestrian American "s-ke-dul'. My bad. My deepest apologies; I shall flog myself 50 times with a wet noodle to atone for my sins....
