my mac is running slow

I have an older Macbook Pro that recently started running slow. It seems like something is running in the backgroud and I can't seem to figure out wat it is. The only software that I installed recently is Office 2011 for Mac, other than that nothing has changed.


My Mac has the 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 Gb of Ram and I'm running Mac OSX 10.5.8


Any suggestions?

When was the last time you repaired/verified your drives with Disk Utility?


How much free disk space do you have on the boot volume? You should leave about 20GB to 25GB free for the OS.


Do a smc reset.


Boot in safe mode then reboot normally.


Open Activity Monitor to see if there is some process hogging the cpu or there are memory problems. With respect to understanding the memory behavior shown in your Activity Monitor read the following:


Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used
