Left Shift Key Highlighting/Deleting Words

I recently purchased a wireless keyboard from Apple and am having a problem with the left shift key. It seems that whenever I am typing and I use the left shift key to capitalize a word, it will highlight the previous word, and then my next keystroke will delete it. Does anyone know how to stop the left shift key from highlighting my previous word? Thanks in advance.
