Problem with connecting camera

At the risk of asking a simple question, the Nikon was turned "On" after you attached the USB cable and looked for it in Finder, Correct?

Have you tried asking at the Nikon forums before accusing Apple. I know it's frustrating, but perhaps the camera is not compatable with Lion, perhaps there is an update at Nikon which will solve the issue. I have a Panasonic and my wife has a Canon and we have had no issues attaching camera directly to our Macs and transfering photos into iPhoto.
