Another option would be to locate a third party service center who can actually replace just the damaged LCD screen for a lot less than what Apple charges. Google for "iPod Classic screen repair" and you should get a plethora of results to work with.
Lastly, you can always purchas a new LCD screen from eBay, Amazon, or a parts dealer and use one of the many numerous guides online to replace it yourself.
