there is a problem with this windows installer package. a program required for this install to complete could not be run. contact your support personnel or package vendor.

This is what worked for me! (On Windows 10 but should work for you if you accomplish the same change appropriately.) Start, All Apps, Right-Click on Apple Software Update (ASU), click on Open File Location. (This will open Explorer to the folder where ASU is stored.) Right-click ASU and select Properties. Select the Security tab. Click the Edit button to change permissions. Select the User Name that you use to logon to your computer. Click the check-box next to Full Control under Allow. (It should auto-check all Allow boxes.) Click OK. Now run the install again. You're welcome...

Thank you! This fixed it. It took me a few tries to fix my Apple Software Update, I had to go to Apple Software Update -. Tools -> Download only -> run manually. My iTunes update installs just fine now

Thanks so much . I've been looking to ways to fix this problem since 3 weeks now and didn't find anything but this finally helped me and made my laptop recognize my IPhone and install the latest version of Itunes 🙂 Thanks a lot again.

Try repairing Apple Software Update from the programs & features control panel, and then try again.
