Mail keeps asking for passwords for my email accounts;

Mail keeps asking for passwords for my email accounts; the passwords have been placed in Account information but they won't stay there. Everthing else is OK. Passwords will not stay and I can only access mail through the web. This is a new problem after 2 years of use. how can I make Mail retain the passwords?
