Using the Hi-Fi with the Comcast/Motorola DVR

Both the Hi-Fi and the Comcast/Motorola DVR claim to have optical SPDIF connections, but when I connect them together all I hear is a sort of rapid pulsed static sound ... there's obviously some sort of incompatibility ... any ideas? I'm so used to this stuff just working!
