Can the time machine be used wireless to the internet or does it have to be hard wired?

The Time Capsule should be hard wired to your modem or modem/router using an Ethernet cable.

While it might be possible to connect the Time Capsule to your existing wireless router using wireless only, this type of configuration is not supported by Apple.
