This spontaneously started happening when I setup my new iMac about a month ago and it is now happening on my husbands older mac laptop. Is this an operating system upgrade glitch?

I went to Preferances to see if there was something going on in the Startup menu...like I had set programs to start upon login, but nothing looks unusual there. Now I'm wondering if I'm thinking PC...and looking in the wrong place. I'm also wondering if it is a Microsoft glitch, but I'm noticing that iCal is also doing it. Tends to be iCal, Excel, Word and Safari. I have not set anything myself to request that they open upon startup.
My husbands laptop started doing it this week...no updates other than the normal autoupdates have been performed on his Mac other than me updating his Microsoft Office for Mac software to the current version. But that update occurred about two months ago.
I know you've not changed anything but check anyway but the system prefs thing was what I was going to suggest, along with the restore windows option in its General pane.
Do you mean "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"? that was checked off in Preferences, General. Do you think that's what's causing it. I'll check to see if that is checked off on my work iMac. I'm not getting that problem at work.
Why is software I closed the night before spontaneously opening at startup the next morning?
