This solved the issue for me, if you are updating through excel etc close them, open outlook, trying to quit or force quit the process for "sync and Daemon" do NOT work, they just reopen, Run the update checker and proceed with the update process, When you are asked to close outlook and the process's do not use CMD Q go to the menu and select quit outlook, This kills all process's, CMD Q just quits the program but seems to leave the services running. The update will then proceed as normal.

used Activity Monitor to force quit both Sync Services and Database Daemon but now Outlook won't work - it's blank when I open it. tried to rebuild identity but Microsoft Database Utility keeps having an error and shutting down. I think the problem is that those two applications now are not restarting, but I get an error message when I click on them in Finder. Any ideas?

If syncservicesagent won't close then follow these steps. It has worked for everyone in my office (almost 30 people).

  1. Go to Applications > Microsoft Office 2011 > Office > SyncServicesAgent.app
  2. Right click on the app icon (control + click)
  3. Select "Show Package Contents"
  4. Open the 'Contents' folder
  5. Move 'Info.plist' and 'version.plist' to the trash (do not empty the trash)
  6. Wait 1 minute
  7. Open Terminal and Kill SyncServicesAgent (explained in more detail in about 20 previous posts)
  8. Complete the Install. SyncServicesAgent will not reopen b/c the required files are missing.
  9. Move files from trash back into the same folder (the Contents folder)
  10. Done

I'm sure this will help anyone still having issues. Just follow each step in order. Good luck!

A slightly easier solution for me was to do the following:

1. Find SyncServicesAgent in your Applications folder.

2. Click and drag it to your desktop.

3. Rename it to something like SyncServicesAgent1.

4. Go into Activity Monitor, find SyncServicesAgent and Force Quit it. This time it won't restart because the system can't find the app.

5. Download and complete the update.

It was not necessary for me to rename and move SyncServicesAgent1 back to the Applications folder, since the update installed a fresh version of SyncServicesAgent. I just moved SyncServicesAgent1 to the trash.

UPDATE: Since I only use Excel, Word and PPT, not Outlook, I have found out that I don't need SyncServicesAgent. So after I completed the Office Update, I did the same trick again to get rid of SyncServicesAgent. So far, everything running normally and there's no SSA to screw things up and burn up useless (for me) CPU time.
