Newly installed Hard Drive, struggling to use time machine restore

I was told to use migration Assistant, but when i try, my new HD is not there, but what is there is my old hard drive, that doesn't make sense to me...but what do i know, can someone much smarter than i walk me through the process?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Mac Mini 1.25 GHz G4 - OS OS 9.2.2

Normally requires that you properly prepare the new HD. Launch Disk Utility, erase and reformat the HD, Mac OS X Extended, then try the Migration Assistant. FWIW, I recommend cloning your existing HD to the new one after its properly prepared, using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!, rather than using the Migration Assistant, which is designed to transfer to another HD that had the OS installed on it. Cloning eliminates that step and ensures that both HDs act and look the same.
