For various reasons I do not wish to upgrade to OS Lion. But I would like to use iCloud. Is it possible to do on OS 10.5.8?

Hello,

You can use parts of it, like you can view everything in a Web Browser, there are a few 3rd party apps to help sync other things, but IMAP eMail will work even in 10.4 or 10.5.

Do not delete the old account yet.

You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.

iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...

On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.

IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:

•Server name: imap.mail.me.com

•SSL Required: Yes

•Port: 993

Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)

•Password: Your iCloud password

SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:

•Server name: smtp.mail.me.com

•SSL Required: Yes

•Port: 587

•SMTP Authentication Required: Yes

Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)

•Password: Your iCloud password

Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria: 8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers. If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message. Go to http://appleid.apple.com then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

Thank you for answering, but it does not answer my question. I do NOT have iCloud already. I would like to have it in order to make security backups. I use a different e-mail program now (Eudora) and I do not wish to change that, that is why I cannot change to Mac OS Lion. So I want to continue using OS Leopard and my question is: can I use iCoud anyway? On the iCloud web page, it looks as if the answer is no. And that seems strange to me.

I have been told to make security backups for my photos, not just on USB-memories, which I already do, but also somewhere on the web. There are various ways if you pay for it, but Apple offers a free one, and since I am an old mac-user, that seemed to be the obvious choice. www.apple.se/icloud was the address I tried (since I am Swedish, but I guess there are others). You get 5 GB for free, but the page tells you to upgrade to OS Lion, and there seems to be no way to use the service if you don´t.

And I will not! I bought a MacBook Air recently, with OS Lion in it , and it made me unhappy. For the first time in my over 20 years of using mac, I was disappointed. The main problem is that it will not work with Microsoft Word - and I have a lifetime of writing stored in Word! And a lifetime of important mails stored in Eudora! I just cannot move into a world where I lose all of that. It is bad enough already with all the new versions of Word...
