Have you tried closing the iTunes app completely and seeing if it works when you re-open it ? From the home screen (i.e. not with iTunes 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iTunes app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
I believe this issue is a software one. I just started experiencing this problem within the past month. I went to an Apple store and no one there could figure out the problem It happens with iTunes Store - you can browse around, but at some point when you return to the main iTunes Store screen, it will crash. I can duplicate this on any iPad within 90 seconds of opening iTunes Store. It happens on every iPad model, regardless of memory size.
The folks at the Apple store tried an iPad reset and restore from iCloud, and when that didn't work, they did a reboot/reset called a DFU, which didn't correct the problem either.
Hopefully Apple will take notice and fix the issue soon!
Thanks King_Penguin. Your solution:

Worked like a charm!
I had the same issue on my new IPad. I shut iTunes down and turned I match off. Problem solved! It IS a software issue caused by I match.
I'm glad that worked for you, Comps72. And thanks for responding to this thread. Unfortunately iTunes Match is not my problem as it not turned on on my iPad.
Is your iPad still having the iTunes crashing problem? Because I am having this problem too on my new iPad that I bought less than a week ago, and I've done everything and still no solution.
My iTunes just closes and goes to the main home screen if I type a single letter in the search box on the bottom right of the screen. This means I can't through my I tunes. Tried the two suggestions above and it it is no better. It worked until recently.
Anyone out there know what is going on?
Seany, after doing what I said above I haven't had that issue again. Good luck with that.
I too have had this issue arise only in the last month or two. I have an iPad 1 32 GB and iOS 5.1.1. No other apps crash and send me back to the home screen, so it's NOT memory issues. It is ONLY the Apple store/iTunes that crashes out. I dont have iMatch turned on so it's not that either. This is a Apple software issue and they need to fix it or roll iTunes back to a previous version. I have done multiple hard resets to no avail. Extremely frustrating as I use the iPad to buy my music, etc.
I have the exact same issue Savage13. iPad 1 iOS 5.1.1 and iTunes keeps crashing all over the place when browsing, sampling music/video and searching. You would thing the QA department would have tested, and checked their own SW when they roll these upgrades out. Waiting for the bug fix - given it is an iPad 1 and new iOS rollouts are aimed for the iPhone 5 and new introductions of HW such as the iPad Mini, it may not be a priority. The lower quality of their delivery has made me think twice in getting the iPad 3 right now.
I'm having the same problem.
Whenever i try to search for a film, iTunes drops out. Ive tried all the resetting etc but to no avail.
So now i am completely unable to access films on itunes.
Its an ipad 1 with ios 5.1.1
The other problem Im having is that ever since I "upgraded" to 5.1.1 the ipad has been painfully slow.
I agree with the sentiment above. I think my next tablet is getting less and less likely to be an Apple.
I am having the same problem (hard reset did not work). Very frustrating. No solution. I have paid A lot of money only two and a half years ago for my ipad. Does this mean such an expensive product only works for a short time properly?
This issue has been going on way too long. Did anyone find a fix yet? My iPad is having the same issue and tried all of the above, but NO luck.
Same here. Only recent, for me, but it's a small miracle if I'm actually able to make it to the actual purchase/download. So frustrating (and keeping me from buying stuff...you'd think that would be a priority for them to straighten out).
You've tried the 'standard' troubleshooting e.g. closing the app via the multitasking bar, logging out and back into your account, a soft-reset of your iPad ?
