typical cost to repair liquid damage on MBP

I spilled about a tablespoon of windex onto the keyboard of my 1.66 i7 MBP. Of course it was on when it happened. I turned it off and flipped it over for a few hours. I was getting ready to go out of town when it happened so I had to close it up and take it on a plain with me. When i got to my destination the next day I tried to start it up and it was dead. I have since read all of the I should have done, but didn't.

I was looking to get an idea of the different cost scenarios to get it fixed. Like if it needs a new logic board, etc... I understand it might be better to get a new computer but I don't have 2800 for another 17'' MBP.

Does anyone have experience having a MBP repaired after liquid damage? How much did they pay and what was wrong with it? How long did it take? Was it extra to retrieve the data?

macbook pro 2.66 i7, Mac OS X (10.6.4), memory 4 GB

I wasn't asking for someone to guess. I'm looking for others who have had their MBP repaired for liquid damage to tell how much they had to pay. I'm planning on taking it a mac store when I get back into town, but I wanted to get an idea if there are situations where it is less than 1000 to repair liquid damage. They have a refurb model that is the same as mine for about 1850 plus tax, and was hoping to find a repair for substantially less than that.

If you don't know no need to leave empty explanations why I should not be posting. Just move on.

It is still a guess because the damage that a liquid can do is so varible. In my case it might cause next to no damage and the cost is minimal. In your case it may have fried the unit completely so it will cost more.

The only way to know for sure is to have someone look at to deternine exactly what you fried in your MBP. Until you do that every is a guess.

While you might consider it an empty statement, I don't.

Thanks again allen. Please move on there is nothing to see here. I get it your a genius, you would have handled the liquid damage perfect... bla bla bla... but you're still not answering the question. So again just move on and flame somewhere else. I'm looking for others who have had their MBP repaired for liquid damage to share how much they had to pay for their particular damage.

It may cost nothing at all, it may cost thousands, but unless you get off the horse and provide some very accurate information regarding the current condition of the internals of your Mac .... it will be a guess.

Here's my guess, $345.19

He's not trying to flame you, he's trying to point out that there can be a very wide range of costs, depending on what was damaged. Only Apple can tell you for sure what's damaged and how much it will cost.

If it doesn't start up at all, though, that would indicate that it is most likely a fried logic board, and thus the price will be high. I believe that I was quoted about $700-$800 just for the logic board when I dropped mine on the floor, and that didn't count other damage. The total in my case was over $1,000. I chose to replace the machine instead.

However, it may not be a fried logic board, so your cost may be completely different.

As I said before I'm not looking for a quote on how much it will cost to fix my computer. I'm trying to get an idea of how much others have spent when they have spilled liquid in their computer. Sure ever situation is different but it gives me an idea when people like thomas share their experience. As I also said before I'm out of town. Actually out of the country and wanted to get an idea of what i'm up against when I return. If you don't know or have not experienced this problem no need to reply with snarky comments'

Lets give the egos a rest boys.

I'm just looking for people who want to share their experience with this problem.

Then provide the exact condition of your Mac

There's more to this than just the extreme variability of the cost. There's also the fact that polls are forbidden here, according to the Apple Support Communities Terms of Use. There are at least 2-3 reports of liquid spills per day that I see, and I only frequent a couple of the forums here. If every one of those people started asking for polls of what everyone else had been quoted for such repairs, things would rapidly get out of control. So besides the fact that the information you might get is not particularly good or reliable, it's a problem for the usability of the forums themselves.

This is not about people's egos.

Allan Eckert has never "flamed" me, even when a less-diplomatic person could have.

What I can say is that I have never accused him of it, assuming I will likely need his help in the future.

But feel free to bite the hand that will eventually need feed you.

Allan ... thanks for your help in the past, just to be sure I say it.

This community is worldwide. Therefore, the price will be a huge range depending on the country, state, taxes, etc. etc. Also, price range depends on the repair shop. Most places labor is more than the actual cost of the repairs!

NOTE: If you purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with. They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer for non warranty (Apple) issues.

If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them.
