I moved stuff to icloud since it was telling me mobile me was going away. now I can't seem to log in to mail on my mac but I am getting it on my iphone. what's up? Ido I need to upgrade to lion? it looks like I will regret it and I am gunshy about doing it, cannot afford to lose a ton of time.

You can use iCloud email in Mail on your Mac, here are the settings for the servers.
Regardless of whether your password works or not you must ensure that it complies with these criteria:
8 characters (or more) a minimum of 1 uppercase, 1 lowercase and 1 number.
If you let Mail do the setup automatically it will fail so ....
In Mail>Preferences>Accounts, click the + sign for a new account, enter your address and password, hold the option key down and press 'Continue'
should I delete my other account? How do I get the mail over to the new account? I am trying to set it up but it is still asking for passwords for the old account even though I am in icloud mail.
In Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced, uncheck 'Enable this Account' that will keep the 'Old' account quiet while you work.
Don't remove the 'Old' account yet.
ok -- there's account type when I try to add the account, is it mobile me, IMAP, something else? I am thinking IMAP? still not working. and one other quick question that is confusing me. it seems I can login to icloud with my apple ID and a certain password AND my e-mail and a different password. Would this be causing the issues? should I set up the mail account with my apple ID or e-mail? I appreciate it. hope this will do it.
You moved your account from Mobile Me to iCloud, didn't you? you went to www.me.com/move and moved your account?
Yes I hit the link in the e-mail and it seemed to move everything. what's weird is I am getting e-mail to my phone and iPad but mail is still not set up. and I would think you'd only have one login for icloud. ok I just tried to login with my apple ID and it won't let me get to mail without my e-mail address. the apple ID I use in itunes is different. not sure if that is an issue.....or if for most people they are all the same. I set up my apple ID awhile ago when I had a different e-mail etc
should the account type be mobile me in the mail account setup or IMAP ? or should it be saying icloud? maybe I need to do something yet with the mac to move over? again, I am still on snow leopard.
Please try your logins, all of them, if you have a .me login and wish to use .me mail then it is the one you should use. If you have data, apps, davservices (calendars etc) you may need to move or replace them in the other account.
Organizing your login is the first job, then go to System Preferences>iCloud and turn on all services you wish to use (if not already on)
mobile me is still the only option for me in system preferences. although I did say I wanted to move everything. is it supposed to change system preferences to say icloud when I move? that coul dbe the issue here. I am still unable to get mail to let me in although I can see my mail everywhere else.
keep saying this even though I have inout same info I use to login to icloud. I am about ready just to forget it and stop using mail on my mac

You are going to have to enter the account in Mail manually:
To enter the account manually go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts, click the + sign, enter your .me email address and password, press the option key and click 'Continue',
enter the server settings below.
If your password does not meet these requirements change it so that it does:
Minimum of 8 characters, including at least 1 uppercase letter, 1 lowercase letter and 1 number, no special characters.
Verify that you are using the correct server credentials:
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
Note: If you receive errors using SSL, try using TLS instead.
Additional Information
SSL is required for both IMAP and SMTP connection with iCloud. POP is not supported by iCloud.

If iCloud is an option, take it. If not take Imap.
