Problem with basic iphone functions - Sound

My iphone is not set on silent, but calls, text, games and even key clicks have no sound. Turned power off, reset all settings. Nothing. can't answer calls, becasue I can't hear my phone ring! Help?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1

Basic troubleshooting steps are Reset (hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the off slider that appears first, then release), followed by Restore using a backup (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414, be sure to perform a backup at step 6; you will be given the option to restore from this backup at the end when you set up the phone again), followed by Restore as new. If none of these work you probably have a hardware failure and will have to take it to the Apple store for evaluation and possible replacement. It should still be under warranty.

Thanks for the advice, but still did not work. The phone thinks that the headphones are in, which is stupid, because I never use the headphones....except now, because I can't hear anything unless I do. For such an advanced phone, it doesn't even know that the headphones aren't even plugged in. Others seem to be able to fix this problem. Thanks. Sigh!
