Second Monitor: How to enable it on Mac Mini?

hey guys, my current setup is 1 screen connected via HDMI and the other i want to make use of can be connected via DVI (also supports VGA.) i ordered a mini-dvi to dvi-adapter port and it'll be arriving in a couple hours.

anyway, to do a trial run, i tried using the DVI monitor by using the Apple supplied HDMI to DVI adapter, but when i plugged the monitor in it just said "no signal" and nothing happened. i also have a VGA(for old monitor) to DVI(for newer graphics) adapter i bought some time ago, but never got the chance to use it. could it work if i connected the mini-dvi adapter to the VGA adapter and then finally plug in the DVI adapter? i hope i'm explaining this clearly. would this work if there were three adapters plugged into together?

thanks

I hope you have ordered the correct adapter, because both the 2010 and 2011 Mac Mini models use the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)
