Can you connect apple tv to amplifier to make use of speaker system rather than tv speakers?

Has anyone managed to connect their apple tv through a amplifier bas unit to take advantage of external surround sound speakers? Seems a shame that we can only get it to go through the tv speakers and not take advantage of our great surround sound.

Any advice anyone?

Apple TV, iOS 5.1, Pioneer base unit.

Your best option is to connect AppleTVs optical out to the amplifier which I assume has optical in, provided that is your amp does not accept HDMI connections in which case you could use that and then send the video to the TV over HDMI using the amp as a source selector.

I've used optical out to a Yamaha surround processor for years from all generations of AppleTV.

AppleTV does not have analogue stereo out, but that would somehwat defeat the purpose if you want 5.1 surround sound (other than DPL encoded stereo).
