In the iPad Settings screen go to Music and enter Home Sharing credentials there.
Next in the iPad's Music app click More on the bottom and it should list Shared libraries and the iPad to choose the source of the music.
The ITunes app on the Ipad is for the store.

Sorry this does not work as home sharing does not appear as an option when I select more. Also I note that whilst my laptop and desktop pc's are listed under "computers" on my apple TV, my I Pad is not listed.

Have you enabled Home Sharing in the Settings section of the iPad not in the Music app?
Also, it's worth rebooting the iPad by powering down and restarting - I've observed iOS devices can be poor at picking up Home Shares if they've been away from the LAN environment and come back to it.
These things are annoying to troubleshoot.
