I renently bought a second hand macbook pro from ebay.  It doesn't have iLife installed
The app store won't allow me to download it.  How do I get it? Chris

Buy it. If the vendor didn't include it then that's your only choice.

Since you bought it second hand you have to have the original owner transfer ownership to you. That will also give you whatever time is left on the warranty. Once that is done and you have an Appple ID you may be able to go to the Mac App Store and download those apps for free (Not sure but I would suspect so).

Now if the original owner doesn't do that then you are SOL and will have to buy the iLife package.

I tried to buy it.  In the nac app store it shows the products with an accept button.
When I accept it tells me I can't download it.
I am aaauming the previous owner of the laptop has his apple account tied to the software.

You really need to WIPE the drive and Reinstall Lion clean so it removes any info from the original owner. You also REALLY NEED to contact them and have them transfer ownership to you. Without that happening there could be other problems down the road.

The MAS doesn't allow you because you need the original apple id account and password.

Also that can be a problem if you need to reinstall the OS,i suppose that it come with Lion ...

ALways you will need the apple id to do software updates for ilife and may for Lion.

The guy was silly because he know that but didn't talk about it.

Ask him if he already link the laptop to him apple id because if no you can do it to yours,i am no sure if after link it you can transfer it but i don't think apple allow it,is like transfer music from one apple id to other it doesn't allow it so with software why different?

Be sure if he linked or no and if i yes be sure you can update the OS without a password.

May contacting apple and explaining the problem you can get some advice.

Software brought through the App Store is not transferable. For example, read the License Agreement for GarageBand section number 3. Go to the App Store type in GarageBand in the search section... When the app page opens, click on the App License Agreement link on the right.

If your computer came with Snow Leopard and the seller didn't supply you with the iLife discs you out of luck and you will need to buy the iLife software. Same with Lion, if your computer came with Snow Leopard the license for Lion is not transferable.

I appreciate what everyone is saying, but I don't care if I have to pay for ilife or not.
The app store won't let me purchase it.

The buy button on thoses apps doesn't say buy, it says accept.

When I click accept it says I can only update these apps through a system update (or something close to those words).

That is because that Mac is registered to some one else and using their Apple ID. If you could log on using thier Apple ID you could install those programs. They are free to owners of new Macs. I have reinstalled Lion a couple of times since getting my Late 2011 MBP and have always been able to download those apps once I log on to the Mac App Store with my Apple ID.

You need to CONTACT the Seller and have him transfer ownership to you. Then you may have to contact Apple to reset the Apple ID used for the serial number of your second hand MBP.

There is NO other way to get those Apps from the MAS without it.

You can buy iLife DVD from several resellers like Amazon.

Your problem stems from the fact that your seller essentially sold you a machine with pirated software since the license is not transferable.. The seller was supposed to erase lion if he purchased it from the app store and reinstall the original OS. You will not be able to update or reinstall your OS because the purchase is tied to the Apple ID of the seller - that is also the reason why the iLife cannot be installed.

Short of contacting the seller to send you the original install disks, you might want to purchase the retail Snow Leopard disk, boot from it, erase your hard drive, and install SL. After updating, you can then go to the app store and purchase Lion, iLife, and whatever else you'd like.

    Thanks babowa - makes sense.

Couldn't I just purchase the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive

Or do I need to get Leopard first and then upgrade?

In order to comply with the license, it states that you must have snow leopard installed even if using the USB drive. Money wise it won't make any difference - the price for both is just about the same as the USB drive.  There is an advantage to having Snow Leopard - you will have an install disk if all else fails!

As an afterthought, your machine did come with Snow Leopard originally, right? That is what I based my posts on.

  • chrischandler Level 1 Level 1

    Came with lion installed.

  • Shootist007 Level 6 Level 6

Ok now that we have cleared that up.

As stated before you need to CONTACT the seller and have him transfer ownership to you. Then contact Apple and register the serial number to you and to your Apple ID if you have one already or to an Apple ID you create.

    EDIT:

Saying that it came with Lion installed means next to nothing. What model is it? When was it made? Is it a Late 2011 model or an early 2011 model
