Switched Home Name, Files Now Missing

Hello all,

I wanted to change the short name of my computer; I followed the directions on an apple support article about logging in as the "root" user. Once I did this, I went in and was able to change the home name to the short name I desired; however, my entire system reverted to like I just installed Snow Leopard again (personalized dock apps gone, desktop image default, and all documents gone).

I was able to find everything because the system was still using the old home folder.

My problem now comes with iTunes. Last evening I attempted to change the iTunes Media Folder location because it was going to the old name and there was nothing there. I changed it to my /Users/username/Music/iTunes and all my music is there, but no playlists. The current location is: /Users/my username/Music/iTunes/Automatically Add to iTunes.localized. What do I need to do in order to get my playlists back? I read a support article about doing something with the file named iTunes Library.xml and also something for the file called iTunes Library.itl (moving them to desktop and then adding them as playlists?).

I just don't know what happened to my computer and would like to understand it all so I can fix it. It seems that me changing the home name messed everything up.

Thanks for any advice or guidance you can lend...I am kind-of freaking out.
