Computer name keeps getting (2) appended to it.

I've searched high and low and can't seem to figure out why my iMac thinks the computer name is already being used on the network.

I can see in the sharing preference pane that the original name is what is indicated with this copy:

Computers on your local network can access your computer at: XXXXX.local

However, the name in the field above it has XXXXX (2) and each time I try to get rid of the (2) I get the message:

The name of your computer “XXXXX” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “XXXXX (2)

I can change the name using the EDIT button to anything else I want, and it doesn't add the (2). But once I change it back to my desired computer name, I get the same message that it's already being used.

I've tried turning off all of my sharing services but that still doesn't seem to allow the name to be used.

Any idea what other process is running that can be using the name? How do I figure out where the conflict is occurring?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I had this very same problem and I think I have solved it. If you go to Network preferences, then selct your network adapter (in my case Ethernet 1), select the Advanced button in the lower right for the adapter then select the WINS tab. The Netbios name needs to be different than the computer name list under the Sharing setting.

I changed this and the problem went away. I have a setting here but not in my MacBook Air and don't see the message constantly there. I do have a couple Windows computers on my network so maybe the setting in WINS got set because of this but changing the name, fixed the issue.

I didn't notice the problem until I upgraded to Mountain Lion. After upgrading I am getting the warning message but I think it existed before since the computer name kept incrementing and was up to almost 5000. I think Apple enabled the warning as part of the ML upgrade.

It's very annoying and needs to be fixed. I don't even care, just get rid of the message.

Yes I also started getting the messages shortly after upgrading to Mountain Lion. I believe the problem is resolved when I use only Wifi OR Ethernet, but that's no solution 'cause I need both connections for different purposes.

So Apple, please fix this or explain us how to setup correctly ourselves! Thank you.

I have finally fixed or patched this problem so the message no longer comes up. I haven't seen the message in 2 days.

It seems the message only comes up when my MacPro is coming out of sleep. I went to System Preferences->Energy Saver settings and with the slider that says Computer sleep, I set it to Never.

No, this is not is not a fix but it does stop the messages from popping up. Maybe it will also give some one else a clue as to the root of the problem.

Hope it helps.

I promised to get back with results of a few tests: The result is that I can't for the life of me figure out what causes this but it's still bugging me everyday. Please Apple! Fix this issue! It wasn't there before I graciously installed a paid copy of Mountain Lion within the hour it came out. I know €15 is cheap for an operating system but if it comes with no support at all it's actually quite expensive!!

I just had the message for the first time about ten minutes ago. I was able to change the name back, buy I have not sleeped or restarted since.

Mainly I wanted to post because I seen people talking about Mountain Lion as the possible problem. However, I haven't updated to it yet. At least, I didn't do it on purpose. If the computer did it on it's own...😕

Been having the same problem on one of my iMacs after I upgraded to ML - number is bow up to 477 on that one. Then today it started happening on a second iMac which was upgraded to ML a month ago but started incrementing its network name last night, number is up to 4 and counting. The only thing that changed with the second Mac is I added a couple of external drives to it.

It definitley seems related to waking after sleep.

I too have suffered this for a long time on a 2010 Mac Mini with Lion installed. It seams to happen from waking the computer when connected with wifi and ethernet for me, have tried various 'fixes' after searching but none have worked.

Was having another play around a couple of days ago and rearranged my 'Set service order' (System Preferences, Network, then little cog icon in lower left hand side) I had 'ethernet' at the top followed by 'wifi' - I moved 'wifi' to the bottom of the list and it seems (fingers crossed) to have sorted the problem - no name changes for a couple of days now!!!

Computer name keeps getting (2) appended to it.
