Our son is bringing over a new iPad +4G from the US. Will he be able to use it via my home WiFi and Virgin media satisfactorily and at what cost,if any?

He'll be able to use your wifi for free. He will be able to get a 3G iPad plan from whatever provider is there that supports iPad 3G plans. The cost of the 3G plan will be up to the local provider where you are. Call them.
