Hi there!
One of my client is trying to find a new printer compatible with mac os 9. I've look around, but only have found printer for Mac OS X. Do you have any ideas? Thanks!!!
I've just had the same problem at work. I found the 'Epson Stylus R340' needed to download the driver from thier site, works a treat and doesn't break the bank either.
Couldn't find many more manufactures that wrote drivers for os 9.
I know you said inkjet but we have been successful with the Lexmark Laser E232. It only prints in Black though. The Software is compatible with OS 9. It does load differently using the desktop printer utility but seems to be very stable. And it will print more copies from the toner than an inkjet.
I just checked the epson driver website, and it seems that the printer you mentioned (Epson Stylus R340) is only available for 10.2 and over. Am I missing something ?
Epson C86 comes into mind but may be thinning out in some areas stock. Epson seems to be pulling away from Mac OS 9 support for some time.
About the only others I have seen is a few Lexmark's like the Z600 series however their cartridges seem overly priced and it is best to get the expensive high yield ones over the moderate yield ones. Another thing about Lexmark, is they may skimp on a cartridge or both from in the box sale, so read the box over carefully.
Do not get me wrong as Lexmark's are a decent printer, however they do have the highest cost per page in printing ever known to the world. If you need to do several copies of something, it may be cheaper for you to make a printable page and photocopy the remainder. Lexmark also doesn' t rely much on Chooser's configurations as they are somewhat a native Desktop USB printer. They can be configured also as a USB Network printer out of the box.
I have had great luck with an HP 2110 PSC three in one inkjet (USB); it's been superseded now by one that reads a camera card, but other than that appears to be the same model. I think the new number is 2175, or 21xx. As I say, it's been no trouble, and the photo reproductions especially have been of high quality. Seems to come on sale at my neighbourhood Staples about two or three times a year, and with a rebate, too. I got mine several years ago for about $100, which I thought a real bargain, and though I think it's a little higher now it's still a good deal.
Be careful when installing foreign language based drivers in a Mac OS 9 based US system. Some may refuse (lack of installed foreign language kits) or cause problems in its use. You may also be paying for something that may US incompatable or a possibility that US measurement standards may be ommited. (Page sizes such as 8.5 x 11, etc.)
Just be aware of any possible risks here, as why US drivers are not listed on their website. US support is otherwise non-exhistant.
If you can find a Canon i-series, I recommend that. I'm using an i850 USB inkjet and have had no problems. Canon has some nice OS 9 software for the printer, too (free of course).
I agree with 5thWheel about the Canon printers. I have a i960 which has been flawless & prints great photos.
Prior to the Canon I had Epsons, both which failed due to clogged print heads. Based on comments posted on various forums, the Epson seems to be the main printer with this problem.
