Upgrade my macbook from itunes 10.0.1 to iTunes 10.6.1

I am trying to upgrade my macbook from itunes 10.0.1 to iTunes 10.6.1 and I get this error: install step failed: run preupgrade script for AppleMobileDeviceSupport. help!

I am on OSX (10.5.8)

Give this a try How to reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service.
