iPod is not recognised on pc

I have an iPod movie and use a pc with window xp. I got the ipod in december and it worked perfectly with my pc. I recently got an external hard drive and transferred my music onto it and this works fine. Since getting the external hard drive the ipod would not appear in itunes. I reset the ipod and went through all the steps of setting it up again and it worked ok for 1 day. The next day i tried connecting the ipod and it was not appearing in itunes. When i connect the ipod to the pc it opens itunes but i it does not appear in itunes. I have waited several minutes for the ipod to load up but still no good. I reset the ipod, re installed itunes and it still doesnt work. I would really appreciate if anyone would be able to help me out.

Since this problem started when you got an ext hd, there may be a drive letter conflict. Try this.

Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.

Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.

The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

Here's some more stuff to try.

Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.

iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.

iPod does not appear in iTunes.

Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.

Strange iPod behavior.

When restoring the iPod, put it into disk mode first.

Putting iPod into disk mode.

I finally solved the problem. You set me thinking on the right track alright. The external hard drive was using E as its drive letter. iPod uses E as its default drive letter so i just changed the external hard drive letter to G and the iPod then showed up in iTunes

That's a little confusing, as when I first suggested a change of drive letter, you said you tried that and it didn't help! It shouldn't have mattered much whether it was the iPod or the ext hd drive you changed.

Oh well, at least you're now good to go. : )
