How can I save the work I have done in power point if the program is not responding?

If it isn't responding all you can do is force quit the application.
Office (2011) apps do have a preference for "autorecovery" (Save preference) which specifies a periodic time (in minutes) which saves your work. So if you restart what you were doing should be recovered up to the last save point.
Of course you need that preference checked which I think it is by default (set for 10 minutes).
