How do you enter letters on the iPhone 4 keypad

The numbers on the keypad have more than one letter assigned to them. How do you enter letters when dialling so that first of all they are recognised as letters rather than the number and secondly how do you distinguish which letter you are entering out of the 3/4 letters assigned to each number ?

The individual keys can be any of those 3 or 4 letters, so 1 press of "2" corresponds to either an "A" "B" or "C". So dialing 1-800-555-APPL would be 1-800-555-2775 (just an example). This is the same for all phones, not just the iPhone.

Hi Wjosten

Your reply indicates that you can't distinguish between the different letters assigned to each number so in your example 1-800-555-2775 could just as well be for example 1-800-555-BRRJ. So here in the UK when, buying credit on a pay as you go mobile, you are asked to enter your postcode (ie zip code) which contains both letters and numbers how do you do it, as clearly you need to be able to distinguish each letter accurately ?

Don't worry about it. You can't "dial" a letter. The system you're calling will do a database lookup to determine what they should be based on the rest of the data you entered. Some systems may prompt you to enter things differently in some cases. For example, press '2' for A. Press '22' for b, etc. Just follow the prompt of the system you're calling into. You're making this much more complicated than it needs to be.
