Cant get my iPad to connect to my college internet.

The network I am connecting to is unprotected and you can connect to it without a password, but when connecting with a laptop you must login using a browser before you get internet access. I thought I would be able to do this on the ipad through safari but it just says no internet connection.

The iPad can find the wifi signal for the network and says its connected to it. However online apps such as safari, facetime, etc wont work and say there is no internet connection.

It seems I just need to get the college login page up for it to work, but its not showing.

Has anyone else had this kind of problem, and how can I fix it ?

What does the schools IT staff say?

Does the school's website say how to connect with an iPhone?

Do friends with iPhones successsfully connect? If how do they do it?

Some site/newwors require Java or Flask to sign in and those are not supported by any iDevice.

The IT staff are non existant or they do not want to be contacted, I cannot find contact info for them anywhere and the website is just as useful. None of us can connect using any type of phone be it iPhone or android. They have the same problem im having with my iPad, where the login page does not appear and it says there is no internet connection but is still connected to the network.

If it was a java problem would the iPad, iPhone etc not come up with an error when trying to display the page rather than saying there was no internet connection ?

The iPad doesn't run Java at all, so entirely possible you wouldn't get a specific error message. Sounds like the network doesn't support mobile. Personally, I'd figure out who oversees the IT department and go over their heads and complain, but that's just me.

I'd second what James says. Find some member of admin and run it up the chain of command. It sounds like your university network isn't configured for mobile at all. Possibly to the point of blocking mobile devices. And if it's that then word to open it up must come 'from high', so might as well start getting your message up there.

I finally got a number for IT services. When I phoned up they didnt have a clue why it wasnt working, they're honestly useless! I was monkeying about with it last night using my lapto at the same time to find server addresses etc.

Then it looked like it was going to work, when I went into safari it redirected me to the login page like it does on my laptop. But then decided it didnt want to work saying "the page cant be displayed because there is no secure connection to the server".

I searched this on the support community and I went with the advice to delete all cookies, set them to accept from visited, and restart my iPad.

Now when I restart my iPad it trys to connect to the wireless network it comes up with a page saying "Login" at the top of the browser, so im assuming that is the login redirect page. However it displays nothing on the page!

Going with you guys adviceI assumed that the page must use java. But when I looked at the source of the page on my laptop it didnt have anything java in it, just javascript, which Im lead to believe is totally different.

Sorry for being a pain but IT services here are shocking. 😮

Looking at the source wouldn't necessarily expose an obvious Java in the same manner it shows JavaScript. Depends on what is coded. And yes, Java and JavaScript are two different things.

If you are convinced it is not a Java app, you could try an alternate browser that allows changing the browser ID to a non mobile version, such as iCab. No guarantees that would work, but might be worth a try.

I'm thinking the login is probably java based. Your best bet is to talk to the IT staff. Surely you don't have the only iPad on campus.
