I have re-read everything and can not figure out why when I try to make a person's name a bookmark in Pages, the plus sign remains greyed out. I have tried making the hyperlink both before and after the bookmark, yet I can still not make the bookmark.
Any pointer great appreciated.

Well, no. It is in the main body text box which is going to flow the entire length of the document. I think I know where u are going...do both the Hyperlink and the Bookmark have to be in the same text box> If so, I need to make that main text box two column, one for the TOC and one for the body?

The TOC, bookmarks and footnotes can only be in the main text body of a Word Processing document.
You can however break up the layout of the main text body with columns and layout breaks, as I demonstrated in my other post.
With only a modicum of thought and planning you can achieve quite complex layouts in WP documents.

The word I wish to make is in the main body text. I chose another word at the begining of the document to be the Link, and the bookmark + sign is still not available to make the highlight word(s) a bookmark to which the hyper link will go.
I created this just now.
What exactly is it you are doing and what are the full requirements for the document.

Thank you, but I think what it is boiling down to is that I need to know how to make a hyperlink. I am opening templates and the same thing...I can not make a bookmark. I am missing something, or there is a step or caveat missing, cause I an not get this seemingly simple function to work. I havve even watch videos online a to how to do this!
Select some text > Menu > Insert Bookmark > it will appear in the Links Inspector
To make the link:
Select some other text > Inspector > Links > Hyperlink > Enable as Hyperlink > Link to: > Bookmark: > Name: > select named bookmark from list
Is the text by any chance already a bookmark or link?

I venture to say there is something wrong with the program...perhaps corruption during download or install.
When I do the first step you suggest, under INSERT, neither TOC, footnote or Bookmark are highlighted...greyed out...as u see.
When executing second item...it enables it as a hyperlink but no bookmarks show up.

That is exactly what you see when you are in a textbox which is what I think I see to the right and another peaking out from behind the menu.
Have you created this layout using Textboxes?
