Have a 2011 Mac mini i5 2.3 ghz, can I upgrade RAM with a single 8gb stick?

Is it possible to upgrade ram from 2 x 1gb modules to a single 8gb module?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hello, it looks like you must have 2 modules installed, & for max speed they need to be the same size.

I was given a Corsair 8b RAM stick, I don't think I need 16 gb total, but hate to waste the 8gb, any recommendations on how to configure my RAM? If I bought a 4 gb module, would it be compatible and run as a 12 gb total setup?
